Exploring the Prayer of Jabez

by Bea Sheftel
as told to Barbara Brabec

And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying,
"Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
that I may not cause pain!"
So God granted him what he requested.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (NKJV)

I first heard about the prayer of Jabez on the Today Show. Katie Couric asked, "Isn't it selfish to ask God to bless you? What does it mean?"

Naturally, she thought only of the material benefits and not about the spiritual. There are both material and spiritual benefits according to your needs and God's plan for you. This prayer is one that opens you to receive the gifts and be blessed. I immediately checked my King James version of the Bible, but found it difficult to understand the old English version of the text. Even so, I said the prayer. That night we stopped at Borders and I bought the book, The Prayer of Jabez - Breaking Through to the Blessed Life, by Bruce Wilkinson. I later learned that this best-selling book has changed the lives of thousands.

I learned so much from the book and the prayer. Something amazing happens in people who believe God answers prayers. Even with a mustard seed of faith, mountains of troubles are moved. The warmth of God's love infuses you. You are renewed in faith and confidence in God's help in your time of need, and ready to receive His blessings every day.

It is like a birthday party, only every day is your new birthday. Your best friend (God) has gifts for you. You are so excited you take the first gift, open it and enjoy it. You forget about all the others He has brought to you. With this prayer, you will be reawakened to all of God's gifts and know they are there everyday, new and waiting.

It isn't a matter of our own logic or doing, but of God's enlarging our territory as a blessing on us. It is really exciting and some people have started prayer and miracle journals to write down what happens. After reading Wilkinson’s book, I immediately began to see a difference in my life and am believing for the unwrapping of the rest of the wonderful gifts. After a short while of praying this prayer, you'll feel the rightness of it in the deepest recesses of your soul. You will know beyond a doubt that you were redeemed for this: to ask Him for the God-sized best He has in mind for you, and to ask for it with all your heart. It isn't selfish at all.

You will certainly want to share your blessings by helping others. That is what I'm doing now. So join me in that transformation. You will change your legacy and bring supernatural blessings wherever you go. God will release His miraculous power in your life NOW. And for all eternity. He will lavish on you His honor and delight.

________

Editor’s note: Bea sent this e-mail to me back in 2001, but I didn’t have the right place to publish her message until now. As a fellow writer, and one who was also reading this book at the time we communicated, I could identify with her as she stepped out in faith to enlarge her writing territory.

"Yes, I'm frightened to step out in faith, but that is the point," she said. "God has the power. He is the one enlarging my world and giving me new opportunities. I don't write Evangelical literature. I write researched articles, poetry, short fiction, novels and memoirs. That is one of my earthly roles, to be a story teller. I used to write for pennies, waiting and hoping for people to read my work so I'd be paid a penny or two a read. I had put my talent into a tiny closet and closed the door, afraid to open it to new possibilities. But the Prayer of Jabez yanked the door off that closet and pushed me out into the light. The other side is the spiritual. God is sending me people who need to hear this message and be blessed by it. If I tried to do this on my own, I'd give up and fail because I'd be afraid. With God working through me, however, and knowing He is strong while I am weak, well, nothing is impossible."

I say AMEN to that! Click HERE to read about my experience with this prayer. - Barbara
