As I watched the Republican hopefuls’ 2008 presidential debate, I
was on the edge of my seat as this thought rushed through my mind:
"Won't one individual make it clear as he steps away from the crowd
that he is allying with God?"
I am living in a fairytale world just as our forefathers were when they
forged this nation. Much the same way any mass of people dream when they trade
one governing body for another. This merry-go-round started thousands of years
ago when the Hebrews asked for a king. God warned His people of the trials that
would follow by trading His dominion for a human earthly king. Obviously, they
didn’t listen then, and we aren’t heeding that warning now.
In the movie, The Patriot, Benjamin Martin (as played by Mel Gibson)
refuses to levy war against the British by saying, "Tell me why I should trade
one tyrant 3,000 miles away for 3,000 tyrants one mile away? An elected
legislature can trample a man’s rights as easily as a king can."
That statement nails our situation today; our country is being held hostage
by liberal, feminist, Buddhist, Islamic, humanist and relativist tyrants. We
need a Biblical Christian patriot who can challenge these bodies head-on by
allying with God.
Evil is nothing more than the absence of God, much the same way that darkness
is nothing more than the absence of light.
"We write this to make our joy complete. God is light; in him there
is no darkness at all." 1 John 1:4, 5.
Where have all the Godly men like the apostle Paul, or disciples Peter and
John gone? What has happened to men with God-given fear and wisdom such as John
Wycliffe, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King? I can’t
help but think that God is withholding that kind of wisdom and letting us paint
our own picture of sin and distress. With that being said, let me be a naive
school boy much the way I was in my Norman Rockwell neighborhood as a youth. In
the paragraphs that follow please join me as I take a walk through mystery and
intrigue as before your eyes I create the Christian Presidential Candidate we’ll
call Mr. Smith.
It’s the night of all nights for politicians, one of those few evenings where
they can trade barbs and tout their own agendas while most of the nation
watches. The lights are hot, makeup has been donned, rhetoric practiced and
honed. Each candidate stands at their podium looking as if they were plucked out
of the same cookie box. Each smiling with the sickening confidence of the
professional orators they have become--pompous, while side-stepping the
questions being handed out and trying to be the allure of every section of
society. However, as the evening progresses, the tempers flare because of hurt
egos and pride, and their true personalities shine through.
With a look of confusion on his face, and hurt in his eyes as the tempers
fly, Mr. Smith stands their in awe of what he’s seeing. But still he stands,
ever the statesman and gentleman with shoulders back, head held high, wincing as
the accusations and derogatory words flare around him. Because this candidate
has been quiet, people see him as a political weakling; it’s as if the debate
leader can smell blood in the water.
While holding up a black leather-bound Holy Bible, he turns to Mr. Smith and
asks, "Do you believe this book from cover to cover to be the infinite word of
God?—you have 90 seconds." Mr. Smith quietly ducks his head as all eyes are on
him, he bites his lip, and squints while he searches for the answer everyone
wants to hear. He looks up and with a confidant, strong, but calming voice
starts to speak.
"I don’t care if I am given any more time this evening, but I would like to
ask for several minutes now to say what's in my heart. I ask the respect of the
crowd and other candidates to allow me to finish. When I have finished, I won’t
have to be asked another question because I know most of you won’t want to hear
another thing from me. But please don’t interrupt me; hold your taunts and boos
until I am done.
"I stand here before you today amongst these other human beings, fallen in
sinful flesh. I am no different than the others in my lust and greed for the
power of this office. When asked this question I searched my mind for an answer
that would appease everyone across this nation, but I quickly came to the
realization that one doesn’t exist.
"I am not good at many things, but I was born a leader. To be a good leader
mandates being a good follower. In doing so, I got down on my knees, and swore
allegiance to my King—my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Tonight I must answer
your question not with what I want to say, but rather what I am must say
because, as the psalmist says in Psalm 119, ‘The unfolding of your words gives
light; it gives understanding to the simple.’ "
"The Bible is the infinite word of God from cover to cover and must be an
intricate part of our lives as leaders. We must consult it on how to govern,
raise our children, treat our fellow man, and finally, how we must lead our
lives.
"Although I wasn’t asked to comment on this topic of great importance in our
country, the question remains of whether to allow or disallow same-sex marriage.
There is only one sin mentioned in the Bible more than sexual immorality, and
that is idolatry (the worshiping of the other gods). Sexual immorality, namely
homosexuality and lesbianism, is abhorrent to God. In Leviticus, God from His
own lips calls it detestable. As long as there is breath in my lungs, I can
never back any legislation that demeans the God-given sanctity of marriage
between a man and a woman the way same sex marriage does. To put a finer point
on it, I will never back any legislation that gives them the same rights as
married people enjoy. However, backing legislation that would strip them of
their God-given rights as people is not something I would stand for either;
meaning I would severely punish hate or any other crimes against them. As God’s
creation, they have the same free will all of us possess, and if they choose to
sin, that’s their choice.
"In closing, I would ask you if there are any simple answers to the problems
that plague this nation. Of course there are! We must get back to doing things
God’s way. If we as a nation fought our sinful desires by holding fast to God’s
word, we might find the problems of this country shrinking in size. We must ally
ourselves with God’s chosen people--the Jews--and once again forge a nation
under God.
"Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe
pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires
of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do
his righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like
the noonday sun" (Psalm 37:3-6).
Since I am in agreement with the fictional Mr. Smith I have painted above, I
would ask you to join me in bowing allegiance to God. However, if we stubbornly
hang onto the providence of Satan by refusing to bow to the greatest story ever
told—The Bible—we will suffer the judgment of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Remember the famous line out of the Movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: ‘After
all, He is not a tame Lion.’ "
"Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to
the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I
have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift
my soul. Rescue me from my enemies, O lord, for I hide myself in you.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good spirit lead
me on level ground" (Psalm 143: 7-10).
Amen!
